He was the leader of the Republic of China and head of the Kuomintang, which was the Chinese Nationalist Party, who temporarily put the Chinese Civil War on hold and allied with the Chinese Communist Party to fight the Japanese during WWII. After WWII, he fled from the communists to the large island of Formosa, where he established the independent country of Taiwan.

Nicknamed the “Young Marshal”, he was the ruler of northeast China. He was criticized for his non-resistance to the Japanese invasion during the onset of the war. After Japanese invasion of Manchuria, Zhang and his Northeast Army worked to suppress the Red Army of the Chinese Communist Party without the support of Chiang Kai Shek. On December 12, 1936 Zhang kidnapped Chiang in hopes of ending the Chinese Civil War.This kind of worked as the two leaders temporarily ended the Civil War. This is known as the Xi’an incident.
